Budget 2019: Why retail sector would like tradition to be nixed

Published Date: 2/8/2019 4:31:47 AM
The retail/consumer sector has emerged as one of the most dynamic and volatile sectors in recent times. The sector has witnessed high consumer activism, change in business/supply chain model, M&A of some of the niche brands in the market, and last but not least, introduction of new players in the market. More than ever, the retail/consumer industry is rife with examples of companies building, buying, or partnering to attain much-needed e-commerce and last-mile capabilities.
It is reported that the Indian retail / consumer market is set to cross the $1 trillion mark by 2020. The continued rise in per capita income and consequent expenditure is testimony to this prediction. With the Interim Budget 2019 around the corner, there is hope that new policy incentives will provide further impetus to the retail/consumer sector. Although tradition has been that major policy decisions impacting the economy are not announced during an interim budget, the Finance Minister recently indicated that the government may deviate from convention to meet challenges confronting the economy .
